But in 2021, he didn't have an exceptional year or extraordinary season.
He personally exited the UCL in round of 16 because of injury.
In an international football year, he came last in his group stage without winning one match.
He didn't automatically qualify his country for the World Cup next year.
He wasn't even European best player of the year.
Hallaand won the Bundesliga player of the season (receipt in comment section), not him.
He didn't win a major trophy except the routine Bundesliga league that Bayern has won 9 straight times. Take away his goals and assists, and Bayern would have still lifted the trophy.
Goals alone isn't enough, how influential your goals are have always been the basis.
He would still have won it with this average performance if Messi didn't have a better year.

For Jorginho. Had Jorginho won it, it would have been a major scandal in football. Jorginho won UCL, but Kante was better than him in the UCL, Jorginho won Euro, but Doranumma was the best player at the Euro tournament. You can't just win an individual award because you're part of a team. He missed a key Penalty in the Euro Final, he also missed a key PK that would have sent Italy straight to the world cup. He was only Chelsea's best player this year, not even the best EPL player, yet you want him to win the Ballon D'Or?

Then Messi.
Making this shitty Barcelona team to compete for the league is a huge feat. Take away his goals and assists and Barca would have ended in 12th or 13th even. The team rode on his back.

Messi reached the quarter finals of UCL scoring in both legs.
Messi won Copa del Rey; in the final, he was the man of the match scoring 2 goals.
Messi qualified Argentina for the 2022 world cup scoring the most goals in the process.
Messi won the Copa America for Argentina for the first time in 28 years. He wasn't just part of those that lifted the trophy like a certain Jorginho, he was the player of the tournament, he scored the highest numbers of goals in the tournament, he was the one with the most assists. That's the first time in a major international competition that an outfield player would win all the individual award in a tournament.
Messi also had most of the man of the match awards. What this means is that, he has influenced more games than anybody this year.
He broke south America goal scoring records this year.
In fact, immediately after his extraordinary performance at the Copa America, I knew for certain he would win the Ballon D'Or.
The reason why some of you are crying is because you are tired of seeing him win the award, it has nothing to do with the fact and and the numbers.
If any player had this kind of year that Messi had, you all would have been asking him to get the award.
It is Ballon D'Or and not a Pity D'Or, I don't have problem with Lewandoski winning the award, but he shouldn't be given based on pity, that would be reducing all his outstanding contributions in football.
He was the best last year, but certainly not the best this year.
